Janet Bernard
Janet came to our school to tell us what Macandrew Bay School was like when she went here. She started school in 1967 so quite a few things had changed. For instance, where the staffroom is now used to be Room 1. There was a school nurse and she gave you a check upon your first day at school. janet and Johhn books were her favourite beginner reader books. They didn't use white board, they used blackboards. She performed in a play every assembly. They didn't have South Zone sports. Room 1 children (S4) had to wash the teachers dishes after play and lunch time.It was a very interesting talk and we got lots of information for our Inquiry questions. by Lili

Amanda came to our class to talk about schooling in in 1970's. Helicopters used to be called whirly birds. They used to play hopscotch. The school pool wasn't covered. The game shed used to be the library. The play ground used to be asphalted. The staff room used to be a class room. The children sat in rows in alphabetical order.

Otago Settlers Museum
On Wednsday 12 of August Room 1 and Room 2 went to the Otago Settlers Museum to learn about early school days. Room1 got to dress up as olden day boys and girls for fun.
Sara told us a story about people travelling from Scotland to New Zealand. They got very sea sick and we enjoyed acting that part!! Then we had a pretend classroom where people got to act. We found out that in the 1800's if you giggled or got something wrong you were strapped. You were not allowed to write with your left hand. The children were told to do therir Maths but not how to do it! We enjoyed our trip.

We also had a look at some old videos from the past and had a play with some of the olden day toys.
It was lots of fun.

We Were Heroes on the Stage!
Macandrew Bay School took part in Stars on Stage 2009 at the Regent Theatre. It took weeks and weeks of practising and a lot of hard work. Thanks to the teachers and Janet the dance teacher for organising it all. Everybody had fun especially the children. In the dressing room every one was nervous but that did not affect our performance. After our performance we were happy and proud, even the parents. Every one liked the dresses and tuxedoes. by Bradley and Barney

World Vision 20 Hour Famine
Room 1 decided to raise money for the World Vision 20 Hour Famine. We all gave a donation of $3.00 or more. Mrs Hawker donated the rice and we ate it for morning tea and lunch. We had to measure out the rice and then add the water. It made us realise what it would be like to only eat rice. We were lucky we were allowed to wash our plates in warm soapy water between meals, some children would not be able to do that. We raised over $90.00 for World Vision. Click on the titile to go to the New Zealand World Vision home page.
More Baking - Pikelets
What better way to learn about volume and mass for Maths than baking. This time it was pikelets. We divided the class into 4 groups. Two groups baked this week and the other two groups will bake next week. Everyone in the class will eat pikelets each time. What a yummy way to spend a wet Wednesday afternoon!
Farewell to Nicholas
At the end of Term 1 we farewelled Nicholas who has shifted to Wanaka. Nicholas started mat Macandrew Bay School when he was five years old, so he has many friends here. He always put in a super effort in anything he did. We will miss him in our class. We hope Nicholas enjoys his new school and know that whenever we bump into him he will flash that wide "Nicholas" smile. Good luck Nicholas.
