Room 1's Spelling Heroes




On the Wednesday 17th June 2009,nine children from Room 1 Macandrew Bay School went to Tahuna Intermediate School to compete in the 2009 Otago Daily Times Extra Magazine Spelling Quiz.We had three teams of three.Team 1 was Alexandra,Lili and Bryn.Team 2 was Harry,Oliver and Seamus.Team 3 was Matt,Rowan and Solomon.We competed against over 20 schools from all over Dunedin.We were all very nervous. What they do:
• Deal with gas and chemical leaks
• Put out fire
• Pump out flooded buildings
• Cut out people who are stuck
• Attend care accidents
• Help police and ambulances
• Fit fire alarms
• Educate children and adults
• Lift fallen trees etc off peoples homes
• Tie down peoples roof in wind
• Use their 30m ladder to take crime scene photos
• Help get cats down from trees
Qualities they need to have:
• Commonsense – think before they act
• Apply their training knowledge to the situation – think about what they already know
• Persist to get the job done
• Team member- listen, co-operate, follow instructions, apply their strengths
• Determination to be the best they could
• Honest about their feelings
• Compassion

• Won the “rainbow jersey”
( 1st place in the World Champs 2009)
• 4th in the 2008 Bejing Olympics
• 5th fastest in the world to complete 12 laps
• Only been cycling for four years
• Otago Rebel Netball player
• Ex pupil of Macandrew Bay School

• Persisted even with a dislocated shoulder
• Perseverance –practising for races
• Can do attitude - when she was behind in a race
• Self Management Skills – discipline when racing and training
• Responsibility for her fitness
• Found a way to conquer her fears on the start line
• Coped with disappointment when on the bench as Rebel

• A “can do” attitude to get to the top in cycling after just 4 years
